Mudra for cough

Cough, also called tussis, is a voluntary or involuntary action that removes foreign particles, microbes, irritants, fluids and mucus from the throat and respiratory tract. It is a rapid release of air from the lungs.

The cough may be intentional or as part of a reflex. Although coughing can be a sign of a serious illness, it usually goes away on its own without the need of a doctor.

Here are some key points about coughing.

  • Some germs use cough to spread to new hosts.

  • There is a wide range of possible causes of cough.

  • Some types of cough occur only at night.

  • If the cough is difficult to diagnose, a chest x-ray may be required.

  • Home remedies can relieve most coughs.

What is a cough?

The cough has three phases:

Inhalation (inhalation).
Increased pressure in the throat and lungs in closed vocal cords.

An explosive air that is released by opening the vocal cords and gives the cough its characteristic sound.

If someone coughs a lot, it can be a sign of illness. Many coughs are caused by infectious diseases such as colds, but there are also non-infectious causes. We examine some possible causes in the next section.

The causes
Most coughs are caused by viruses and disappear without treatment.

Causes of acute cough (short term)

In most cases, the infection is found in the upper respiratory tract and affects the neck;

  • Flu

  • Cold

  • Laryngitis

  • If it is a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), the lungs and / or lower respiratory tract become infected like the trachea. Examples are:

  • Bronchitis

  • Pneumonia
A sharp cough can also be caused by hay fever.

Causes of chronic (long-term) cough
Chronic cough can be caused by:

  • Smoking

  • Mucus drips through the nose from the bridge of the nose (after nasal drops)

  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux)

  • Asthma

  • Certain medications (for example, ACE inhibitors)

  • Chronic cough in children is most commonly caused by asthma, but it can also be caused by conditions such as dribbling or GERD.

  • Tuberculosis, fungal infections in the lungs and lung cancer are less frequent causes of chronic cough in adults.
