More than 50% of adults over 65 have degenerative joint disease. This condition is associated with pain, loss of function and reduced resistance, which ultimately leads to weight gain and associated complications. The underlying cause of this condition is usually a chronic repetitive movement that causes inflammation and structural damage in the joints.
Risk factors: predisposing factors include repetitive movements, infections, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, osteoporosis, hormonal disorders, obesity, sickle cell disease and bone disease. Osteoarthritis also commonly occurs in men and women before age 55, but then increases in women. Osteoarthritis of the knee is more common in African-American women. Higher rates are observed in women in the knees and in men in the hips.
History and symptoms: patients may experience pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, loss of mobility, swelling, weakness of deformed joints and damage to the cartilage. As the disease progresses, pain and discomfort in the joints persist, which can be alleviated with resting states, which can limit activity and impair quality of life.
Degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis is due to the loss of articular cartilage within your joints.
The articular cartilage is the cushioning that is on the ends of our bones.
