If you feel unusually tired or sleepy during the day, it is usually called drowsiness. Drowsiness can lead to other symptoms, such as lack of memory or falling asleep at inappropriate times.
What are the causes of drowsiness?
A variety of things can cause drowsiness. These can range from mental states and habits to serious health problems.
Choice of life
Some habits can cause more drowsiness, for example. Like long hours of work or change to a night shift. In most cases, your drowsiness will decrease as your body adjusts to your new schedule.
Mental health
Drowsiness can also be the result of your mental, emotional or mental state.
Depression can dramatically increase sleepiness, as well as high levels of stress or anxiety. Boredom is another known cause of drowsiness. If you have any of these mental problems, you will probably feel tired and listless.
Diseases
Some diseases can cause drowsiness. Diabetes is one of the most common. Other conditions that can cause drowsiness include those that cause chronic pain or affect your metabolism or mental states, such as hypothyroidism or hyponatremia. Hyponatremia occurs when sodium levels in the blood are too low.
Finally, infectious mononucleosis (mono) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are other well-known causes of somnolence.
Drug
Many medications, especially antihistamines, tranquillizers, and sleeping pills, mention drowsiness as a possible side effect. These medications have a label that warns them about the use of this medication before driving a car or operating heavy machinery.
If you feel drowsy because of your medication, talk to your doctor. You can prescribe an alternative or adjust your current dose.
Insomnia
Excessive sleepiness without a known cause can be a sign of a sleep disorder. There are a number of sleep disorders, each of which has its own effects.
In obstructive sleep apnea, blockage of the upper airway causes snoring and respiratory arrest during the night. This forces you to wake up often with a loaded sound. Narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome (SJS) and late sleep disorder (DSPS) are other sleep disorders.
