Causes of chest congestion
The two most common causes of chest congestion are particles in the air, as well as bacteria and viruses that cause upper respiratory tract infections.
Particles in the air
Some things in the air can enter your body simply by inhaling. B. Allergens and dust. In general, these particles are harmless and are trapped in the lining of the nose and respiratory tract. Small, hair-like structures called eyelashes carry these particles stuck with mucus to the neck. This mucus can give the impression that your chest is blocked.
Bacteria and viruses.
An inhaled virus or bacteria can cause an infection that leads to a blockage of the chest. At first, bacteria and viruses behave in a similar way to allergens: they penetrate through food in the body and are transported through the eyelashes. But they also cause inflammation and force your body to produce excess mucus in the respiratory tract to eliminate it. It is possible that your body can not get rid of this excessive and thick mucus in the usual way, and the mucus gets stuck in your lungs, causing an obstruction of the breath.
Symptoms of chest congestion
When you inhale harmful particles, your body reacts in two ways, which produces a feeling of blockage in the breath.
Mucus
Producing more mucus can actually be a good thing! It is your body's natural reaction to an irritant. Although it is one of the best-known signs of cold in the chest, it helps to eliminate harmful germs from the respiratory tract. The texture and colour of your mucus can change with the cold development in your chest.
It can be thick, transparent or white mucus. Then it could turn yellow or green while the cough stops. Green slime does not necessarily mean you need aggressive treatment or antibiotics. On the other hand, black slime can be a symptom of a more serious problem, and it is recommended to consult a doctor.
Cough
You can cough with all the excess mucus: it is the first tool in your body that physically removes harmful particles. The presence of extra mucus activates the nerve endings, called mechanoreceptors, and activates their "cough reflex". Although it is uncomfortable (and quite terrible), the removal of mucus actually helps to eliminate germs from the respiratory tract. This cough may start early and persist even when your other symptoms have disappeared.
