Hingu is the Sanskrit name of Asafoetida, and it means: destroyer of cold and phlegm."
We use resinous exudate of the root of Asafoetida.It is an antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, anthelmintic, emmenagogue and diuretic.
How to use Asafoetida(hingu)
Abdominal pain
Take a small piece of Asafoetida and mix it with castor oil and warm it. This mixture can be taken internally in adults and rubbed over the abdomen in infants and babies. Alternatively it can be taken in one glass of buttermilk.
Flatulence
Take a piece of asafoetida and fry it in ghee. Take this thrice in a dose of half teaspoon a day to get relief from gaseous distension of abdomen.
Indigestion
Take a small piece of Asafoetida and dissolve it in a half cup of water and drink it to get relief from gas pain and improve digestion.
Fainting
Take a little bit of Asafoetida and dissolve it in some lime juice and drink thrice a day to steer clear of fainting bouts.
Dysmenorrhoea
Using Asafoetida fried in ghee regularly to get rid of the pain and discomfort accompanying menstrual periods and to promote the free flow of fluid.
Respiratory infections
Taking half teaspoon of raw asafoetida twice in a day before the meal is beneficial to make the airways and reduce respiratory allergies.
Urinary retention
Fry asafoetida in ghee and take it washed down by some rice wash to promote flow of urine,
Dental caries
Take a little asafoetida and heat it in a pan and fill the caried tooth with it.
