Head Ache Ayurveda Remedy

A headache is a common health problem.Both physical and psychological problems are considered to be responsible for this disease.

Causes Of A headache:

Defective eyesight, inflammation of the sinus, high blood pressure, sleeplessness,tumour in the brain, prolonged overwork, emotional strain, exposure of the head to excessive heat, cold or sun rays, indigestion, constipation and wind formation in the stomach among others, may produce a headache. A headache is a symptom of many other diseases like fever, influenza and bronchitis, etc.


The treatment of a headache is a headache for physicians.This general statement does not hold good for the practitioners of Ayurveda.In Ayurveda, it is known as Shira Shula.It is of several types depending upon the predominance of one or the other of the dosha.

Depending upon the domination of dosha, the signs and symptoms associated with headache vary.For example, in shlaishmika type of a headache,there is always heaviness of the head,watering of the eyes,inflammation of the middle ear,running of the nose,inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, nasal polyp and many other similar symptoms.

This type of a headache generally occurs in the early morning, in rain or the winter season, and immediately after food.

Children are more affected by this type of problem.Paittika type of headache is always associated with burning sensation in various parts of the head and bleeding from the nose.It generally aggravates during mid-day and summer and autumn seasons.The Vatika type of headache is always associated with giddiness, dryness and roughness of the eyes and various parts of the head and bleeding from the nose. It aggravates during mid-day and summer and autumn seasons.The Vatika type of a headache is always associated with giddiness, dryness and roughness of the eyes add various types of pain in different organs of the head.In another form called ardhavabhedaka, pain appears only in half of the head.

Times a headache starts in the morning and goes on increasing as the sun goes up in the sky till mid-day and then as the sun comes down the pain also slows down.This type of a headache is known as suryavarta.An actue type of a headache which is tough for treatmentg is known as anantavata.In this type, the pain starts back of the head and migrates to the frontal as well as temporal regions.This is associated with redness and swelling in this region and is known as shankhaka.

Different types of treatment are to adopted for various types of headache.A medicine which is commonly used for all kinds of problem is and taila. This is medicated oil prepared by boiling different medicinal plants in gingerly oil.About 20 drops of this medicated oil are to be dropped into each nostril and deeply inhaled.It is not poisonous.Therefore, while inhaling, if a portion of this oil goes into the stomach through the throat, it is not harmful.

A deep inhalation of this oil may cause little irritation and may result in sneezing.Even water may come out of the nose in large quantities.This oil, if properly inhaled, removes the blockage of the path from the sinuses to the nasal cavity.

Removal of this obstruction immediately relieves heaviness and mental strain.This oil also produces a soothing effect on the nerves.Normally this inhalation should be done only once.But if a headache is a continuous one or the patient is having an acute attack of a headache then this can be repeated, two to three times daily.

In Shlaishmika type of a headache, Lakshmi vilasa is very useful.This is available in the form of tablets of 0.25 mg.each. Tow tablets of this should be taken three times a say mixed with honey.In Vatika type of a headache, Godanti bhasma and Shringa bhasma are very useful.Godanti plasma and it is prepared in the form of powder by a particular pharmaceutical process.

Shrinhorn of deer is burnt into ashes by a particular pharmaceutical process.These two powders are to be mixed with a dose of 0.25 gm.each and be consumed with honey three times daily.
