Ayurveda is a science of life. This ancient science is developed thousands of year back in India. The Ayurvedic way of diagnosing is more accurate than any other medical system as it includes everything about the patient. Here is a description of how Ayurveda diagnosis a disease.
The Ayurvedic way of diagnosis of diseases:
Ayurvedic practitioners don't use modern equipment like a stethoscope, sphygmanometer, but they diagnose the disease accurately. The practitioner of Ayurveda is called vaidya.
The text of Ayurveda lay down the various techniques for diagonalizing various disorders. As Charark said:-
" The physician should endeavor to investigate correctly each disease by the use of three means, namely, authoritative instruction, direct examination, and inference.
This investigation is carried out in three stages:
Interrogation of the patient.
Objective examination.
Examination by inference or indirect method.
Firstly, the evaluation of the patient as a whole is made in terms of his bodily constitution, the tone of the system, compactness, proportions, psychic make-up, gastric capacity, capacity for exercise and age.
The second process is to assess the progress of the disease, special aetiological factors, curability or incurability.
Thirdly, an evaluation of his expectancy is made in view of the prognosis. After this, he goes on to the next stage of the examination and that is the examination of the eyes, hair, pupils, urine, faeces. The entire body of the patient is then palpitated to find out whether a particular organ or the entire system is cold or hot, moist or dry, rough or smooth, light or heavy, sensitive or insensitive, rigid or loose, depressed or elevated.
Body odors are paid special attention to.Examination of the ears includes listening to the various sounds emanating from the affected organs. According to Ayurveda, three things are responsible for the health of any human being ie Vata(wind), pitta(bile) and Kapha(phlegm).
Health, According to Ayurveda, is a state of balance of the three doshas.Since the cornerstone of Ayurvedic philosophy is the belief in an imbalance of the three doshas as the causative factor in morbidity, the physician does not bother overmuch about the name by which disease is called. It is the concern of all Ayurvedic physicians to determine the dosha which has been vitiated.Touch, inspection, and interrogation are the main points of diagnosis adopted by the ayurvedic practitioners. In addition, they would inspect the pulse and sometimes , the urine of the patient and then medicines are supplemented with diet prescribed according to the dosha from which the patient suffers. The regimen of diet is as important as the remedies prescribed since the former help to restore the balance as much as the latter.
