The pulp of the ripe tamarind fruit is useful in the treatment of bilious vomiting, flatulence, and indigestion.It is also helpful to relieve constipation.

An infusion of the tamarind fruit pulp prepared by macerating it in water is particularly useful for loss of appetite and disinclination for food. To get good results add black pepper, cloves, cardamoms and camphor to taste can be added to this infusion after straining.

To get relief from Flatulence, have a mixture of a tamarind and jaggery.

The method of preparing this recipe is

Take some tamarind that has been more than one year old.

Soak it in water for overnight in an earthen container.

Soaked tamarind and jaggery can be mixed in equal quantity with one tablespoon of lime. mixing it well again with a stick.

When it becomes like a jam, it should be put in a glass container, filling only three-fourth of the container.

Keep it covered and left for 72 hours.

A teaspoon of this jam should be taken twice daily on an empty stomach for one month.

Another method of using tamarind for the treatment of digestive problems like morning sickness, indigestion and pyrosis are to chew a piece of tamarind with some salt and pepper.

The ash obtained by heating the bark with salt in an earthen vessel can also be given to six to twelve centigram doses for colic and indigestion.

It works wonders with the combination of other digestive foods like, ginger, cumin and pepper , in the form of an infusion. It is also useful for bottle fed infants. Add cumin seeds and a large cardamom in boiled milk to give bottle fed infants.

How to prepare and use aniseed infusion


Take a cup of boiled water and add one teaspoon of cumin seed and leave it covered overnight. The filtered fluid is the decanted and taken with  honey. This drink helps to relieve gurgling in the abdomen. It is also useful in preventing gas and fermentation in the stomach and the bowels.

  1. Boil 300 ml water.

  2. Add one teaspoon of Aniseed

  3. Lower the heat and keep it simmer for 15 minutes.

  4. Strain and drink it hot.


You may add honey for sweetening also add boiled milk. If ground aniseed is to be used, half the quantity of seeds should be used and the quantity of water should be reduced by one quarter.

  1. Take half litter water and boil it.

  2. Take one teaspoon of Aniseed, Caraway seed, Fennel seed.

  3. Prepare it in the same manner .


A cupful of this tea should be sipped three times a day after meals. The left over should be kept covered in a cool place. The quantity required each time should be heated before use. If ground seeds are to be used, the quantity of the seeds should be reduced by one quarter.
