Why you should choose a pharmacy career
When kids are growing up, they are almost always asked what they want to be when they grow up. Once they enter high school and starting making decisions that will shape their future, most young people start to think more seriously about which career they will choose. Although not the first choice to consider for many young people, there are lots of great reasons to choose a career in pharmacy.
Flexible hours
One of the great things about working in a Halton pharmacy is that you have a flexible working schedule. Most often, pharmacists are in charge of their own schedules, which can be particularly great if you are also raising a family or if you want to work more hours to increase your earning potential.
Good beginning salary
Speaking of earning potential, pharmacists make a very good living, even when they first start out. Although salaries always vary depending on the particular area you work in and the capacity of your job (a neighbourhood pharmacy versus a hospital pharmacy, for example) pharmacists can expect to make between about $70,000 and $150,000 per year.
Job security
People will always need a pharmacist. In fact, there are usually more pharmacy jobs available than there are candidates to fill them, so job prospects in the field are very good.
Great benefits
Because they want to attract new pharmacy graduates to work for them, most companies are offering very attractive compensation packages, most of which include benefits like drug coverage (of course!) and paid vacation time.
The ability to help people at a grassroots level
If you’ve got the desire to help people feel their best, a career in healthcare may be attractive to you. You may first thing of becoming a doctor or nurse, but there are other ways to be involved in healthcare in a way that allows you to relate directly with patients daily. Pharmacy careers allow you to do just that. Pharmacists have encyclopedic knowledge of medications and they provide a very valuable service to each patient. They offer advice and consultations and, in many cases, can even administer treatments such as a flu shot. Pharmacists do much more than count pills and fill bottles! In fact, they often know much more about medications than doctors do, as this is their speciality.
The “cleaner” side of health care
Let’s say you’ve contemplated a career in health care, but aren’t sure if you have the constitution for things like drawing blood or performing surgery. Pharmacists don’t do any of that! They don’t deal with any bodily fluids (other than listening to patient’s description of symptoms!) so this can be a good option. You still get to help people feel better while working in a clean environment.
Social interaction
If you are a people person, you already have one of the best qualifications for being a pharmacist. Pharmacists nee to be good communicators, as they need to relay important and often life-saving information to their customers every day. This grassroots community involvement is one of the best perks of being a pharmacist!
